This is a great example of how the small inventor got that “wow” product idea into an International market.
8.10 – 9.00 Inventor Clinic / discussion
Two examples lined up of inventors with bright ideas working out how/if they can get their idea to market.
Useful examples where inventors are seeking advice from members of the KRTI

8.10 – 9.00 Inventor Clinic (Sue Marks) / discussion
Close at 9.00 – further networking at the Grove Tavern.
Grahame Herbert's talk shall be giving his folding bike talk next month.
Instead, this month, speaking will be electronics suprimo Lawrence Archard, in his own words ¨I will be telling tales from 20 years of developing electronic products, including bomb-sniffing bees, pipes under Belgian canals, toy inventors, detectors of dodgy diseases, skipping ropes, wrinkly skin and knee implants. See if you agree with my lessons learned and help me reinforce the ones I foolishly forget.¨
Following this, Sue Marks will be presenting a new, patent-granted, fastener for advice and discussion on where to take this idea. |

Townhouse Building – room TH 103 Kingston University, Penrhyn Road Campus (not our usual room but adjacent to it) Penrhyn Road, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 2EE (Parking available in front of Town House Building)
Grahame Herbert our planned speaker - architecture, bicycles and much more - is unfortunately not able to present as he is recovering from some medical treatment. We wish Grahame well and he will be back to present to us in January. The Airframe story (see www.airframebike.com) is not to be missed so put Wednesday 18th January in your diary now.
6.30 – 7.00 Networking 7.00 – 8.00 Dr Ben Lindsey presents “Progress in Surgery is through Technology” – see below 8.10 – 9.00 Inventor Clinic / discussion
Close at 9.00 – further networking at the Grove Tavern.
Ben is a Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital – transplants, vascular and lots of stuff I don’t understand. He will present some of the issues in surgery and how basic (plus intelligent) engineering makes it all happen. No live demonstrations so shouldn’t be too much trauma for those of a queasy nature. He’ll pose some questions for the innovative engineers among us and with any luck we’ll all get to the pub with all our vital organs safely retained. The observant reader might have noticed the similarity in our names – yes, Ben is my elder son and he very nearly studied Engineering rather than Medicine – indeed his highest academic award was the metalwork prize at Edgecumbe College in New Zealand (don’t ask!).
Also, Bob is happy to accept a pitch for the Inventor Clinic. |

Tim Franke has been involved in KRTI since its start. He is a planner at Gatwick Airport. He is also involved in the Cbike with another KRTI member. Graphene's strength could make the difference.
This presentation will cut-through Internet and News hype about Graphene, and is aimed at fostering enthusiasm for ideas that some Corporates won't touch.
RSS Feeds - Don't waste time looking for news... let it come to you! - Look! There's one! If there's time, Andrew Cordani will be giving a brief introduction to Really Simple Syndication- RSS Feeds. Sometimes your web Browser might show a funny Orange 'Feed' Icon when you open a website you like. Have you ever wondered what this icon is for? How do News Agencies gather all that information? Andrew will try to answer these questions and more. |

There are a couple of issues to be constructively re-visited from July’s meeting –namely the lightweight granite construction method looking for an application (I’d like to have a bit of a brainstorm on this) and the Eliptigo drive mechanism. I’d like to explore these 2 areas in relationship to the “Idea/technical/funding/Commercial” pie chart which I’ve presented to the club previously.
· Note 100% design this week – for interior design / architectural products www.100percentdesign.co.uk
Earls Court, London 22nd – 25th September
· Also notice the up-coming British Invention Show - http://www.britishinventionshow.com
Alexandra Palace, London 19th - 22nd October 2011
· I have included below an invitation from Mark Sheahan to present at “Inova” http://inova-croatia.com/
Zagreb, Croatia 9th - 12th November 2011
Hope to see many inventors at the club meeting on Wednesday. |

It’s now the August “rest period” for the club. The next meeting is on Wednesday 21st September. A programme is to be announced but there are a couple of issues to be constructively re-visited from July’s meeting –namely the lightweight granite construction method looking for an application and the Eliptigo drive mechanism.
Some members might recall the magazine produced for the Wessex Round table by Frank Landamore. This is up and running again and looks a very good publication – many thanks for Frank for doing this – it can be downloaded on www.innoventique.co.uk.
Happy inventing during those summer hours.

*** NOTE: Venue (for this meeting only) will be : PRJG2011 in the John Galsworthy Building (through the main entrance to the university building in Penrhyn Road).
For the last meeting before the summer break the shedual is packed:
We have a couple of presentations from Club members:
Sean Jackson writes: 'This is the story (with prototype samples) of how the need for a simple plastic counter-top spinner for displaying mini-cards finally led to the invention and development of a concealed modular system that allows for the manufacture of virtually any type of elegant lightweight marble and granite furniture at affordable prices.’ (the presentation isn’t so circular – I hope)
And Besmir Imeraj will explain his designs/ideas for a new cross-trainer-hybrid.
Bob Lindsey will lead a discussion to explore a bit deeper a couple of previous presentation ideas.
If there's time, Andrew Cordani would like to discuss a novel idea to help people taking medication on repeat prescriptions.
News update:
Those who saw Azhar Hussain explain his plans to the KRTI for the isle of man GAT for electric bikes will be interested to see his listing with an MBE for services to motor sport – well done Azhar – See Members News Section for details |

Stephen Britt conceived the power assisting cycle pedals in 2008 when he was stuck in traffic during a 90 week roadworks on his commute. Playing with a Pedalite and reversing the idea gave him the inspiration for the product. Since then he has won £54,000 in awards, including Barclays - Take One Small Step, had 31,500 people view a video of the product and left work to develop and commercialise the product. UK patent was granted in January 2011, PCT is filed. The product needs pre-production development to relevant standards, marketing and production to launch. The prototype will be available to try on a cycle trainer after the talk.
See:
As usual there'll be post-presentation workshop by Bob / inventor clinic TBC followed by (after 9pm) an opportunity for further networking in the Grove Tavern.
For future reference: The July meeting is not in the usual room in the Townhouse due to building work. The meeting will be held in PRJG2011 in the John Galsworthy Building (through the main entrance to the university building in Penrhyn Road. |

In May we are fortunate in having Bill Currie, celebrated inventor coming to talk to the club. Based In Croydon, Bill is a locksmith by trade, but in addition to inventing tools for this trade his expertise covers a wide range including the Trappit (a gadget for trapping a bug – and not despatching it!) to running invention events for children in schools. Bill was named British Inventor of the year (2008) by the British Inventors Society, has appeared on the BBC One Show, and developed aids to help the disabled. |

Richard will tell his story - the agony and the ecstasy of developing this innovative product and getting it into the market.
